Linares round 8 and 9

Sorry for the break, I've finally got an update for you.
In round 8 all games ended in draw, although both Magnus and Morozevich showed a lot of fighting spirit. Magnus was surprised by a4 in the opening and chose to sacrifize a pawn for compensation. He thought g4 from Moro looked pretty wild and thought black was close to winning after e5. He had problems finding a winning line and thought he played inaccurately at some point to reach a draw in the end.
In round 9 with white against Aronian Magnus was again surprised in the opening - twice in fact - and at a certain point he could not find anything better than to enter the line from Topalov-Leko. He thought he might find an improvement, but didn?t, and is fairly happy with half a point today after the surprises in the opening.
(In my opinion Magnus shows a mature attitude by somewhat reducing his willingness to take risks when he is up against one of the top 10 in the world.)

Morozevich scored a nice victory today against Leko and was finally paid off for his aggressive and creative style. Great for him and great for the audience. The other games ended in a draw, although Ivantchuk probably had a winning position against Topalov but would have lost on time if the game had continued.
We?ve got a tight and symmetrical standing with +2,+2,+1,even,even,-1,-2,-2, and hence all players within 2 points so that nearly anything may still happen to the final classification.

I'll just keep congratulating you, I guess! Even though we did at one point in this tournament get used to Magnus winning, it is still a remarkable achievement to be able to draw against these top players in such a major tournament.
Good luck for the rest of the games!

I agree totally that Magnus has shown a lot more maturity in this tournament. Knowing when to take risks is an art in itself. Positional considerations is of course the most important factor, but also psychological considerations are
not to be underestimated. And of course judging how big a risk you CAN take is a skill that is developed as you get more and more experience. It seems that Magnus has taken a huge step in adjusting to the very top level in a very short time. I just want to mention a great player like Radjabov. Although he had some early successes he still needed some time to establish himself in the top. Magnus seems to have adjusted in almost no time. That is very impressive indeed. Of course he's still young, and results may vary, but his games now looks like the game of a seasoned veteran. Good luck with the rest of the tournament!
