Gausdal final update.

In round 9 as white against Krasenkow Magnus avoided the main lines with the somewhat unusual Nd2. He thought he was OK or slightly better until Krasenkow played c5 and Magnus had to move his d3-knight back to e5 to make space for the queen on d3.
In the ensuing tactics a few moves later Krasenkow allowed Nd2 with multiple treats and was simply worse.
In black's time trouble Magnus tried to consentrate on playing good moves to keep the initiative. After move 40 Magnus was a healthy pawn up and winning a second while blacks pieces where not well coordinated so Krasenkow resigned and Magnus won the tournament with 7/9 !

The prize includes a "Troll" (in Magnus' hand), a Norwegian fairy tale monster supposedly living inside hills only to appear during the night. They look like tree roots come alive (and probably first arose in the lively imagination of night wanderers in Norwegian woods).

Portisch and Rozentalis played draws to share 2nd with Krasenkow and Kulaots drew Lie to take 5th with 5/9. Norwegian GM Lie had a disappointing start with 0/3 but finished in style with 4/6 !

In the GM B - group IM Bromberger won with 7/9 to score his 2nd GM-norm while GM Oral won the last round to clinch shared 1st (2nd on quality).
Norwegian highlights included IM-norm for Espen Lie (younger brother of GM Kjetil A. Lie) and Kjetil Stokke. Congratulations !

In the Elo-group Magnus' class mate Anders Hagen won on quality (ahead of 4 other players on 6,5 points).

Magnus and the other 3 Carlsen participants had hoped to score 50% overall and despite a low of -5 during the tournament, we managed +1 (Magnus +5, Ellen +1, Ingrid -2, myself...) in the end !

Many thanks to IA Hans Olav Lahlum for organizing the event ! His cooperation with the hotel is a good example of making the most of local possibilities. When the ski-lifts closed on April 22nd, the hotel would normally be closed until the summer season starts in June (with hiking, tennis, golf etc), but they kept open another 4 days mainly for the chess tournament.

Some may have been surprised to see that Magnus avoided main lines through most of the tournament. The main reason is that his computer broke down the night before the tournament and he managed without his opening base at Gausdal. Having all his class mates present  Magnus generally gave priority to social activities and skiing and swimming. Playing at less than 100% of his capacity he felt the margins was on his side this time and was of course very satisfied to win the A-group and even gain some rating points.

His next chess competition will be a 2-game rapid match against Radjabov on Corsica May 18th, and on May 25th we leave for the Candidate matches in Elista.

Congrats, Magnus! To dominate like that while distracted and without a computer is something!

Flott levert Magnus!

Congratulations Magnus!
With 7/9 result on this tournament you got enough ELO points to be now exactly 2700 ELO rated.
I hope we'll wait not too long before you reach 2800 mark.
Keep up good work ,and you'll achive remarkable things in chess
(in your age Anand,Kramnik or Kasparov were well below 20th place on rating list).
Best wishes.

Thx @Sverre. Accidentally I was the German translator of that site (magnuscarlsen.no) , but since they stopped writing English news I understand nothing there now (I don't speak Norwegian...) (sorry, Mr. Carlsen, for an off-topic comment, I saw no other way to respond to Sverre...)

Kampfgeist,
no need to say sorry. (Info on magnus.carlsen.no hardly seems off-topic.) Thank you for your interest!
Sverre got it right, although we're hoping for an extension of his June program with another candidate match 6-12. :-)

Last summer Magnus also participated in the Norwegian championship and the Arctic Chess Challenge in Tromsoe but has not made any decisions regarding this year.
