Corsica and Valencia visit May 17th - 21st.

When Magnus agreed to play a 2-game rapid match against Radjabov ("Match of the Hopes" between the top two juniors in the World) in Porto-Veccio at the south of Corsica on May 18th, we hadn't checked the flight schedules and were hoping to spend at least part of our National holiday May 17th at home. (Norwegians celebrate our Constitution and freedom from the Danes as of May 17th 1814).
In the end we had to leave early Thursday morning and missed the whole celebration, his sisters speech at the local school etc. Travelling 120-150 days a year comes at a cost sometimes.

Anyhow, Corsica sure was a great place to visit both due to the hospitality we were meet with, the fantastic scenary of the island and the exciting chess match. We landed in Figari, a short drive from Proto-Veccio and stayed at a nice beach hotel.

The Corsica league chess organisation of Leo Battesti organise chess classes in school for most children. The local team competition attracted around 300 children and the Radjabov-Carlsen match was played with one game before the children tournament and one (plus blitz and tie-break) after.

Magnus lost the final tie-break after drawing both the rapid score (one win each) and the blitz games (two draws). Anyhow he was happy with his comeback after losing the first rapid game and for having created very promising positions in all 4 games at certain stages.
Radjabov is very strong as well as more experienced and nearly 4 years older, so time will probably only improve Magnus' odds in the years to come.

Afterwards the winning school teams got their prizes.

Magnus had also agreed to play a simul in Alzira close to Valencia on May19th and stayed during the whole weekend to visit a opera in the evening and see the football match Levante - Osasuna on Sunday.

image37

It was amazing to see the media interest in chess, and Magnus was interviewed by several television channels as well as multiple local and national newspapers.

image38

He also played some games at an institution and supported an initiative to introduce chess in hospitals by the Antena 3 Foundation.

On Sunday he also played a game with chess-entusiast and famous Oscar-winning film and play director (of for instance "Amadeus"), Milos Foreman.

And we surely enjoyed the beautiful and modern city of Valencia !

After 3 days in school, Magnus is off to the Candidate match against Aronian (starting 27th) on Friday morning.

Thank you Martin,
Magnus won all 13 games, and I think all the other GM's and IM's won their as well. This was very surprising to me as at least Magnus' opponents were very strong. They looked like master players (above 2000) nearly all of them and many positions were equal far into the games.
