Elista Round 5 - another comeback !
In round 4 two of the matches were decided. Kamsky beat Bacrot and Leko Gurevich with the impressive score 3,5-0,5.
Magnus had a bad day "at work" and lost to Aronian as black in a Bogo-indian, where he several times discovered the flaws in his calculations just after making a move. He thought he was back in the game after Rd5, but also later made too many mistakes to survive against a top player like Aronian.
Until round 5 Magnus was the only player who had equalized his match, could he do it again?
Remarkably the game showed many similarities with round 3, in that a promising attack was transposed into a better endgame that was decided by mating threats with a pawn on f6. After the game both players agreed that Aronian's Ba6 was not the best and the b4-push premature.
Magnus thought his plan of defending the queen side with Bc1 and Rb1 in combination with e5 would give him a clear advantage, and it probably did. After spending a lot of time calculating alternative attacking continuations he didn't find anything concrete and opted for the better endgame. It was not clear how and if he could win until he found the f4 plan. At that stage Aronian looked comfortable until he discovered the winning line (that was played). (If Aronian had advanced his c-pawn and Queened he would have been mated).
We saw another comeback as Polgar finished off Bareev with a nice attack to reach 2-3 before the final round.
The other 4 games were drawn so that Grischuk won 3,5-1,5 against Malahkov, and we face a very exciting round 6 with Aronian - Carlsen and Kasimzhanov - Gelfand at 2,5-2,5 while Shirov has to win with white and Polgar and Ponomariov with black to equalize their matches trailing 2-3 against Adams, Bareev and Rublevsky.
My impression is that both media and internet spectators thoroughly enjoy and appreciate the great nerve and excitement brought by staging these 8 candidate matches simultaneously.
A comment also on dress code. In the first round the players were encouraged to put on a T-shirt from the main sponsor Rosenergomash. As there was no contractual obligation to do this, most did out of good-will, and some changed into a preferred shirt after the photo session. In general I think the players dress well. Costumes vary a bit with age and personal style which is something we should appreciate and allow.
The stage looks tailor-made for candidate matches and altogether the show looks very impressive from our places in the audience.
Going into round 6, Aronian-Carlsen has maybe been the most interesting match featuring the top-seed against the youngster, four decisive games so far and two comebacks, and it feels a bit unreasonable that one of them will have to leave the Cycle today or tomorrow. But that's life....

Good Luck for this game!!
And please you have to tell the organizers that this has been a great event. With exception of the first round the tournament web site has been excellent! News, grandmaster analysis etc. And not the least, but everybody has been fighting all the time. No lazy short draws here. Hope this is a sign of what we can expect in the future. The last thing I am hoping for now is that Magnus will stop Aronian. That would be fantastic! But this has been a success for Magnus no matter what happens now. Equalizing twice against Aronian. Amazing!

Well done again Magnus for another excellent
game.
Can I just ask, how were the pairings chosen?

Good Luck today Magnus.
The pairings where chosen like this (if I remember correctly) the lowest ranked to qualify for the candidatematches was paired with the highest ranked (Magnus 16th and Aronian 1st) then 2nd
was paired with 15th. 3rd with 14th and so on.

Great fight by Magnus!
As for luck, we can also say that Aronian was lucky earlier in the game. It's not luck, it's chess!
As long as Magnus is on the look out for Aronian's "cheap tactics" he may go on to the next phase and maybe even to Mexico.
Keep up the fight Magnus!

Yes, a great win by Magnus. The players must be mentally drained after intense games in such quick succession.
Magnus unfortunately has just lost the game in round 5. It looks like he is struggling with Aronian's opening.
Hopefully he can win round 6! Good luck!

Congratulations Magnus. Even though you lost overall you have done yourself proud. You have a very bright future ahead and I believe that you will be World Champion one day!!!

Yes congratulations for an extremely well fought match! It was incredibly exciting. Equalizing three times must've made Aronian age three years in one week. Perhaps you don't feel like it now, but this has been a remarkable success for you. You have proven that you are on level terms with whoever there is. And.. You are only 16.
That must be the scariest part of it for the rest of the elite players. Thanks a lot for all the fun, and good luck in the future!

Fantastisk prestasjon, Magnus. Kun 16 år og blant verdens beste. Det er så jeg ikke tror det er sant det jeg ser. Du er fantastisk flink !

Kudos to Magnus for a very exciting match, for his will to win, for his uncompromising play.
Not this time yet, but I agree with GM Anand that it is "hard to imagine he will not be World Champion" someday.

The world went wild when you tied the match 5-5.
You gained so much incredible respect.
ICC was overwhelmingly cheering for you.
The joy was incredible.
Never before has ICC seen such emotions displayed cheering for you when it went 5-5.
You also gained thousands of chess fans.
Many Aronian fans were cheering for you to win.
Many chess fans were new to watching you play.
They were extremely impressed and now you are their top player.
You earned their loyalty and respect.
I have of course been watching all your games since the World Cup.
I am very proud of your performance.
You did better than anyone expected against the toughest player at the Candidates.
You came so very close to winning.
When Mexico is all over,
it would be so nice to see you and Kramnik sit down for a nice 16 game match for the World Championship title.
I know the world of chess fans would support your winning.
I hope your entire family is filled with joy today because you did so very well.
You make everyone proud of you.

Outstanding performance Magnus. When you equalised by winning the last rapid to make it 5-5, I screamed of joy in a way I haven't done - and never thought I would ever do again - since Rekdal's penalty against Brazil in 1998.

Great fighting Magnus! Keep it up....super performance...

Actually Jimmy already said everything there is to say. It may sound strange to you, Magnus, but you make people glad. It's not only your breathtaking performance. It's your natural way of behaving on and offside the board - everyone notices you're just yourself, and this your well-balanced "self" happens to be one that people like to identify with. Your personality is nothing to be taken for granted in general, all the more specifically in your age. Most probably this even adds to your "natural" strength in playing Chess, especially as this game, I believe, is often decided as a psychological discipline. Anyway, this candidate match, in my opinion, is your greatest success so far - ahead of every other of your tournaments, including e.g. Morelia-Linares or the World cup... The result of having lost doesn't mean anything to say so. As Jimmy said, you gained so much incredible respect.
By the way, Henrik, if I may say so, I am also very much impressed by the humane, sincere and natural way you deal with us fans which seems to reflect your style towards Magnus.
Well, I hope all that wasn't too drippy... ;)
Very kind regards from Germany once more

Why do you.
Always write.
In short sentences.
Like I am doing.
At the moment?
Anyway, congratulations on a great week of chess, Magnus. You didn't play up to your standard in some games, but in other games you played above your standard. Well done.
You have a big following in the gay chess community of Los Angeles. We love you and follow all your games. And I'm sure you have many female admirers around the world as well!

All,
Thank you for your support! It is much appreciated.
Magnus does not like to lose (obviously), but with all the praise and support he has received for his fighting spirit and comebacks he is quite happy about his performance in Elista.
He gave Aronian a tough fight and secured his three first gains ever in their encounters.
Magnus' next tournament will be Dortmund June 23 - July 1.

Dear Magnus, I am not a ranking chess player, but a good friend of GM Seirawans, and--I can assure you--wholely respectible to not quite win against the world number three, in every way worthy of the great future champion you will be in the not too distant future, it is almost better to be loved by all chess fans and respected, and to know that the ENTIRE planet is rooting for you, than to qualify for Elista this time.
Enjoy some rest, and some raisens, and juice, or *himm* the ladies, and see you next cycle in indominable form.
warmly, dk
