Elista round 6 and tie-breaks.
Some more old news from Elista.
In round 6 Magnus again surprised Aronian in the opening, but after the brilliant Bf4-e5 he felt he was worse. He chose the more active continuation Bb4 (instead of f6), and was happy that Aronian did not take back on c3 with the pawn after which the forced ending is clearly worse for black. Instead he lost (or blundered) a pawn but it is not easy for white to penetrate the white square defence of black and the strong knight on d5.
Magnus felt he had equalized when he made some mistakes before the time control. After the time control Aronian allowed the drawing rook sac on g3, but the position would anyhow have been very difficult to win, and Aronian was also maybe afraid of overplaying and losing. Tie-break!
In the tie-break Magnus drew black pieces first and played a Benoni where he felt quite comfortable until the horrible mistake Qe5. Aronian played the ending accurately to secure 1-0.
The next two games were tense and in the ending Aronian was pressing but Magnus wasn't really afraid of losing any of them.
In the final rapid game Magnus chose a slow set-up to try to outplay Aronian. An what a game!
Aronian played well and white did not have much of an advantage. The unbalanced position offered some possibilities and when Magnus found Bxb5 followed by the double threat if mate and attack on b5 with Qe5 the game was borderline between draw and winning for white.
Anonian managed to force Magnus to give up the b-pawn, leaving only the g-pawn in the queen ending. Theoretically a draw but hard to defend. And when Aronian made the decisive mistake of checking on c1, Magnus is winning. The other two tie break matches were finished by then and the audience gave Magnus quite an applause. I'm also told emotions were running high on ICC and other sites.
The regulations only left room for another 10 minute break before the first blitz game. In retrospect the players should be allowed somewhat more after 4 long rapid games.
Anyhow Magnus was clearly worse after the mistake a4 and true to his style Aronian again went on to win a technical end-game in an impressive way.
Magnus chose the Samich variation in the Nimzo Indian in the second game, sacked a pawn and may have had some compensation. However, Aronian defended well and later won another pawn and more material to decide the game.
Congratulations to Levon for winning this even and fair fight.
And congratulations also to Leko, Grichuk, Bareev, Shirov, Gelfand, Kamsky and Rublevsky!
In sports generally the winners are celebrated and the losers forgotten.
Therefore I'm especially happy to see all the heart warming support and enthusiasm for the match and for Magnus, also after the defeat. Thank you very much!
Tomorrow morning we're flying via Moscow and Riga to Oslo, and the next tournament Magnus will play is Dortmund starting June 23rd.
Lastly some words of praise to the Fide organiser and GlobalChess. The 1st matches of the 2007 Candidates have been very well organised and the internet site has been excellent. Keep up the good work!

Hello from an Armenian fan. You were fantastic, it is pitiful that you were drawn against Levon - we'd have all liked to see you advance into 2nd round. Good luck at Dortmund.

Magnificent effort, Magnus! Don't get discouraged, keep it up - you'll get them!

It does not matter that you lost the match, Magnus. At 16 years of age, not even Bobby Fischer accomplished what you just have. You are on the road to becoming World Champion, so I hope this loss only motivates you to achieve that goal next time.

Thank you very much Magnus & team, for this great fight. Having such a tough opponent, you still were able to show brilliant wins and tough competition. Your future looks bright, Magnus, just keep it up! Good luck in Dortmund!

If Magnus keeps up his progress, I have no doubt that he will be World Champion within 5 years.
We chess fans have needed new blood for a while now.
Thanks, Magnus!

Great match. A pity it went bad for Magnus in the blitz games.
The last rapid game was superb! A theoretically drawn position, but - it ain't over till it's over :)

I wonder how Bobby here can conclude that Bobby Fischer was better than Magnus 16. Magnus' ELO is over 2700. Was Bobby Fischer over 2700 at the same time? Of course the chess games now are a lot better than in 1960 or so, when Bobby Fischer was the same age! Or have you taken that into consideration? Yeah, sure you have. I bet your rating is at least 700, so you probably know what you're talking about.
Magnus is probably the biggest talent the world has seen! He is a big assett to chess. The world loves him!
The other players above 2700 are professional, and have real big teams helping them! Magnus is a natural, with limited resources. Hopefully he will get good help in the future, and become a World Champion. No doubt he has the ability to become one in the future!
Thank you for the great entertainment!

Fantastisk Magnus! Helt fantastisk!

I'm totaly agree with gegga, this are other times!! it was so different when fisher play, now it's more difficult, and really whe can't talk about which is better, i think that fans of magnus don't care if he is best than whatever or worst than whoever... just we care and we get relized that he's making and exelent work, his progres is awsome!! really, exelent, and of course it's why
we love of him, we admire him so much, but really if we have to talk about who is better?, FOR ME MAGNUS CARLSEN IS THE BEST CHESS PLAYER IN EARTH AND I DON'T CARE ANY OTHER beside i know that bobby fisher it's a leyend but really he doesn't compare with magnus really they are so differents...
MMM just other thing... Mr. Carlsen i made a question before and i want really an answer... i'm wondering if magnus will come to mexico even like a guest or mabe he will be one of the MG's that will going to participate on the open matches... well i really don't know but i want to know that hehe, because i was plaining go to mexico city to see magnus play... but if he doesn't go... really i don't have enough rasons to go... well... that tournament is something that we can't miss but.. well i know my own things... well sorry just i want to know that. regrets!!! and a lot of kisses for magnus!!! HE'S MY GUY!!!! hehe!!! bye!!!!

Fantastisk match! Fantastisk underholdning!

On behalf of organized chess life in Norway: Thank you for a fantastic performance! You gave us all a great experience,
even if the result was not as some of us predicted and hoped, we all enjoyed the match very much. You showed us some great chess magic.
All the best for you and your family.

It seems harsh that such an even match had to be decided by a penalty shoot-out.
I wish another way could be found.
Anyhow, Magnus must go away with a feeling of great satisfaction at his performance. I wonder what this will have done to his rating. Did you notice that actual rating and performance rating switched with that of the top seed?

Gegga: Magnus' ELO is over 2700. Was Bobby Fischer over 2700 at the same time?
Carlsen's Elo is 2693, the Elo rating system was adopted by FIDE in 1970, when Fischer was in his mid-twenties, and you shouldn't write Elo in all-caps, it's not an abbreviation.

You're right, Elo comes from the creator, Arpad Elo. Sorry about that. And thanks for the information, I usually correct other people's mistakes, so I appreciate that.
Carlsen's Elo is 2693 on the April list, but he has now got around 2709 unofficially. Probably that will be his new Elo-rating from July 1st.
Anyway, do you think Fischer was at the same level when he was 16? I'm asking, because I don't know the answer. I would guess that he wasn't. I don't think anyone has been. But I'm not sure.

Congratulation, Magnus, it was a wonderful games, and for me you are the winner of this match, you drawn with stronger and more experienced player, and only blitz games tripped you, but you showed a really great performance!! Go on, and in a few years you will deserve to be called a World Chempion! Let the Force be with you ;)

Maia,
thank you for your support !
Frankly Magnus currently does not plan to go to Mexico during the WC in September, and I do not think it is very likely.
However, I cannto rule out that something may happen later, in case i invited for a side-event of some kind.

It is not fair to compare Bobby Fischer with Magnus.
Bobby would be 16 in march 1959.
Magnus was 16 at the end of November 2006.
Wow over 47 1/2 years apart.
The chess competition is much more professional today.
Bobby was a natural talent who worked very hard.
There were no computers to help him and he did it all on his own.
No one will ever compare with Fischer because of that difference.
Bobby was the first one to be a true chess professional.
He always work expensive suit and tie and he always demanded the best playing conditions.
Professional playing conditions.
Up until then it was just a sort of amateur game.
Now all players use computers to learn chess.
This makes them stronger.
Magnus has to be stronger than Fischer at age 16 because he has a computer to help him.
Bobby had to work it all out on his own and it took many more years beyond 16 to learn all he learned.
Magnus is stronger but his opponents are stronger also.
Chess is a more professional game today.
In the old days I was a
fan of Bobby Fischer.
Today I am a Magnus fan.
I hope that Magnus will make chess even more professional.
A part of more professionalish is the ability to bring more money into chess.
It would be nice to see a World Chess Championship being played with a prize fund of $50 million dollars.
That would be Professionalism.

You write: There were no computers to help him and he did it all on his own.
Well, the competition was easier as well. They did not have computers either... But I agree, it is not possible to compare the two.
