Dortmund June 23rd. Round 1 starting 15:15.
Today starts round 1 of the Sparkassen Chess-meeting in Dortmund.
It is the 35th edition of the "International Dortmunder Schachtage".
Dortmund, with about 600.000 inhabitants, is situated in the western part of Germany in the Ruhr-area in the region Nordrhein-Westfalen.
In the region previous heavy coal and steel industry are more and more replaced by modern industries like computer, bio and nanotechnology and the river Ruhr is now used as water supply.
Borrusia Dortmund is one of the most famous Bundesliga clubs.Up to 83.000 spectators follow their home games.
Flying into Dusseldorf, we arrived in Dortmund Thursday.
Magnus' classmate Jon L. Hammer (soon IM, with a GM norm) is together with us. He is playing in the Open.
(Magnus' second during Elista, Kjetil Lie is playing in another tournament in Pula, Croatia and can hopefully help Magnus' sister Ellen to a good result!)
Magnus is participating for the first time in this category 20 super tournament over 7 rounds. His opponents are in round 1-7:
Leko, Naiditsch, Alekseev, Kramnik, Gelfand, Mamedyarov and Anand, and expected score is about 3.1 out of 7.
As start number 4 Magnus has white every second round (against Leko, Alekseev, Gelfand and Anand).
Due to a respiratory decease there has been uncertainty about World Champion and 7 times Dortmund winner Kramnik?s participation, but he has arrived in Dortmund and during the opening ceremony yesterday evening it was finally confirmed that he will play. He is starting with white against the World top ranked Anand!
In yesterday's press conference Magnus said his opponents includes the best players in the world and he does not have high expectations about winning the tournament. His ambition is to make himself worthy of the invitation.
We certainly look forward to an exciting tournament!
