Dortmund Round 4.
Wednesday Magnus faced Kramnik as black, and on a miserable day (sore throut etc) his calculations were often erroneous and he did not seem to stand a chance.
They played another Catalan and after white's a3 Magnus was uncertain where to place the bishop.
He underestimated Na5 and suffered some 10 more moves as Kramnik efficiently exploited his advantage allowing no counterplay and took the sole lead with 3/4.

Anand grind down Naiditch to share second place with Alekseev who drew Leko as white. Gelfand - Mamedjarov also ended in a draw.
Losing before a free day is never pleasant but I think Magnus enjoyed a relaxing day yesterday and has recovered well both physically and psychologically.
Today Magnus is looking forward to white against Gelfand. His friend Jon L. Hammer is leading (!) the Open tournament and plays white against IM Guido Kern.

The weather in Dortmund has been quite cold with some rain showers, but yesterday we had some sun. Lack of summer heat is anyway preferable for the chess players.

Thanks Henrik. It is always 10 times harder to concentrate when feeling under the weather, so Magnus did have a good excuse for losing to the world champion.
Good luck today,
Sam.

I think it is a pity (although understandable from a loving father) that you talk about a 'sore throut' and not about the incredibly strong play of Vladimir Kramnik. He is just too strong for Magnus (but not forever!).

Ron, you are WRON :)
i dont think Kramnik is that strong, Magnus showed a great performance and have won against the top players in FIDE list, and had drawn with kramnik b4, so he is capable to deal with him, everybody have their days, and 27 was not magnuses day, but you have no right to accuse his father like that. Mr. Carlsen is pretty objective in his comments, he was saying kramnik plays strong..

Yes, congratulations on breaking 2700 as the youngest ever - fittingly, Kramnik had the old record (18 years and about a week, July 1993 - of course by then it meant being top-5, but still...)
Magnus is doing a perfectly OK tournament so far and should be satisfied unless he loses to Anand tomorrow.
