Biel GM Tournament - After round 6

No bloging last week.
I was on vacation in Norway and without internet connection most of the time.
I can assure you the silence was not caused by lack of appreciation for Magnus' performance in Biel!
After 6 rounds he is a full point ahead of pursuers Radjabov, Polgar and Onichuk.

In round 1 against Bu Magnus was happy with his position after 19....e5 20.d5 e4 giving good winning chances. Bu may have had some drawing possibilities but the defence was at best very difficult. A hard days work for Magnus but of course a most welcome start.
In round 2 against Polgar, as in all the black games so far, Magnus was worse after the opening, but felt the position was defendable.
Against Avrukh he thought he had excellent winning chances but had overestimated or misjudged the position. However, he never felt in any danger and does not consider the end position worse for white despite the missing pawn.
In round 4 against Motylev Magnus equalized after the opening but played too fast and failed to anticipate the true strength of 32.Qf7. He was in trouble for a few moves, but by the time Motylev blundered with Bd6 the position was already unclear.
Magnus was very satisfied with the whole game against Onichuk in round 5. He did of course like the move 29.b4 and also the way the knight on a6 played a decisive role.
Sunday Magnus overslept and came to the round against Grischuk a few minutes late and still groggy. He played the wrong move order in the opening and was left with the isolated pawn on d5. Fortunately the mistake was not decisive. He never felt the game was lost and purposely entered the theoretical drawn rook endgame with a pawn down.

Magnus and his two Norwegians friends Anders and Daniel (who play the main tournament) played football with the Russians again tonight and should be fit for fight for tomorrow.

It sounds like Biel has put together another great chess festival this year. Thank you!

Henrik Carlsen

Ahh, welcome back and thanks for the interesting behind-the-scenes insights. Most impressive results so far, and oversleeping for a round that begins 2 PM is also very, very impressive. Those morning rounds are a pain :)

It is often said that in order to win an event you need to play well and have a little bit of luck. Vs. Onischuk he played very well, and vs. Motylev he was a little lucky. So all in all it looks very promising for the tournament!
One question: How early did Magnus see the idea with b4 vs. Onischuk? When watching the game I was running Rybka along, and it didn't see the move until it was actually analysing the given position, and not immediately either. I thought for sure it was the kind of move a human could miss, so I was very impressed with the way he finished the game.

It's great to see that you're still following Magnus, Maia! :-)
You are a great, devoted fan, I must say!
Unfortunately Magnus lost (surprisingly so) today.
Hopefull he will be back with a victory tomorrow! It might be difficult with the black pieces.
I hope he forgets today's game. He managed coming back in the match against Aronian earlier this year, so I'm still an optimist!

It's sad that he lost today to a player he should never lose to... :S
Oh well.... let's hope he can still bounce back and win this tournament!

Wow, talk about falling apart. Two dreadful games in a row.
Oh well, a draw tomorrow and Magnus will actually gain almost one elo point.

Hmmm, 2 games lost in a row is quite suprising, especially to two of the least threatening players! Magnus started off the tournament so well, but the last two games have been very disappointing. If he beats Radjabov tomorrow there is still a chance that he may come first!

Oh no.... :S
It seems Magnus his agility is not good yet :(

Answering 15...Kf8 with 16. Bxh7 is pure mockery of your opponent, so I think Magnus got a lesson well deserved this time.
Painful maybe, but so well deserved. If he wanted to be arrogant, why not just start the game with 1.h4?

I AM WATCHING THE GAMES IN BIEL AND I MUST SAY I HAVE TO GO EVERYDAY BECAUSE IT IS REALLY INTERESTING. I HOPE MAGNUS WILL BEAT RADJABOV. IT WILL NOT BE EASY, BUT IT IS SURELY POSSIBLE. LAST YEAR THEY MADE TWO TIMES REMIS. THIS YEAR MAGNUS MUST WIN TO WIN THE TOURNEMENT. MAYBE THAT IS GOOD FOR HIM TO BE UNDER PRESSURE.

Fantastic and quick I agree!!
Congrats to magnificent Magnus.
Such a quick and devastating cruchings are rarely
seen among ELO2700+ oponents.
If he continues with such pace ,Magnus will break 2800 mark before his 18th birthday.
Scary.

Thank you for all the support!
Magnus was of course extremely happy to regain his confidence and win today.
I'll ask him about details concerning the last 3 games later.
He will travel to Tromsoe in Northern Norway along with his school class tomorrow but has not yet decided if he will play the Arctic Chess Challenge or not. (He is very tired right now.)

The playoff games were very exciting.
TV would have great ratings for chess with this kind of performance.
I must tip my hat to Onischuk.
He played right up there.
He gave you a great run for the title.
Who could ask for more excitement.
You did have a great comeback today after losing those 2 games.
Your game against Radjabov was superb.
Everyone raves about it.
You were definitely the better chess player today.
I hope you can always do so well.
But next tournament please do not lose any games.
Sends a scare to me.
I like it better when you win all the games easy.
Although the action in the playoff match was exciting and fast.
It was really great chess at its best.

Hei Henrik,
Vennlig Hilsen,

Congratulations with the tournament victory!
Some good moves, some bad and a couple off brilliant ones.
I actually liked the infamous 16.Bxh7!?/?!. It takes guts, and the best way to learn from mistakes is to make them. Maybe 18.Bxf5 would have given better chances?
Good luck in Tromsø, it will be a real Arctic Challenge after Biel!
