Arctic Chess Challenge

We're nearly 70 degrees north!
Not many other places at this latitude are as hospitable as Tromsoe. A thrieving university city with stunning surroundings warmed by the Gulf stream.
Although the winter is long, they enjoy a mild and beutiful summer and more than 2 months of midnight sun. Tromsoe sports a large number of restaurants and bars and are called the Paris of the North.
Located on and by an island in the middle of a broad large fjord we're facing spectacular 1000-1500 meter mountains in all directions.

The slightly green clear water looks inviting but with some 12 oC it made our short swim in popular Telegrafbukta yesterday very short indeed.

This year's 2nd edition features 98 players from 16 countries and 11 GM's above 2580 with Magnus as the top seed.

In round 1 Saturday a tired Magnus played his friend and collegue Brede Hagen (Fide Elo 2034)  from the Top Athletes School. Magnus had a poor day "at work" while Brede probably played the game of his life and after being worse most of the game, Magnus accepted a draw in a three kingside pawns + rook + piece ending. The other odds bomb of the day was young Even Thingstad (Fide Elo 1893) beating GM Nick de Firmian with the black pieces! The remaining 47 higher rated players won their encounters and as a result Magnus faced de Firmian in the 2nd round! (I wonder if ever the 1st seed has played the 12th seed at table 25 already in the 2nd round of a big open before?!)

After 12 hours sleep Magnus was fit for fight and slowly grind down de Firmian who lost on time after move 35.
3 other young Norwegians drew or beat their higher rated opponents and several others came very close in round.

Magnus will face FM K.Larsen with black in round 3 tomorrow (and will this time play on a higher board than his father :-) )

does anybody bother to read this? personally i am happy to view magnus' games - his father's commentary seems superfluous. sounds like one of those increasingly twisted tennis parents.

Hi Henrik, thanks for the update, interesting information and beautiful photo!
How long does this tournament go on for, and what is Magnus's next tournament?
Best wishes,
Sam.

But why do you read this when you obviously don't like it.... inconsequential idiot!

To the anonymous poster above: That was a rather silly statement. Of course it is interesting to read the information about what Magnus was thinking during his games. If you don't like it, then I believe your salvation is closer than you may think: Just don't type the blog URL in your browser :-)

I can't find anything superfluous at all!!! Quite the contrary! Please, Henrik, don't care even a bit about this "?"-named, superfluous something...
You are right, I had to rub my eyes seeing Magnus play de Firmian against each other in the 2nd round in spite of their results, what a weird coincidence. And I feared, Magnus might say to himself: "Oh no, it was wrong to take part at this tournament. Now I spoil my feelings about the Biel victory. What if I go on losing to de Firmian...? etc." But, phew, he won. How much did Magnus think about the lost Elo points after the draw?
Nice interview he gave to Breisacher. Good lad.
Greetings from Freiburg, Germany

Yeah, ignore that idiot above.
I just stumbled onto this blog a few days ago.
The only complaint I'd have is that I wish it were updated every day :-)
Glad I found it.
I wish great things for you and Magnus.

Sam,
in Tromsoe they play one round per day from the 4th upto and including the 12th.
Magnus will attend school and probably not play any other tournament until ECC in Turkey October 2-10.
Martin,
12 hours sleep seemed to have transformed Magnus who was in his usual confident fighting mode before playing Nick and he felt he was better the whole game.
He does not worry much about rating anyhow.
?, I'm sorry for contributing to your distress.

I see, the start is anything but good for Magnus (after draw against Larsen... and again in a worse position).
Wish him the best in the next rounds. Also best wishes for the rest of Carlsen family in the tournament :)

I can't understand why "?" reads this if he doesn't like it. And why does he write something like that? It's OK for him not to like it, but don't bother the rest of us with silly comments like that. Lots of people read this blog, and we like it! Great to hear from Magnus' father. Magnus doesn't give to many interviews, and it's great to hear this first-hand-information from Henrik!
Keep up the good work!
But Henrik, I must say that I hope I'll never have to see you higher listed than Magnus on a score sheet again....
Good luck both to you, your daughter and Magnus!
Hey, you're still ahead of GM Nick E. De Firmian after 3 rounds!
I predict a win for both Ingrid, Magnus and you tomorrow!

Where can I find those blitz games in which Magnus beat Anand(i think it was glitznir tournament or something ) do those PGN's even exist?Perhaps if they dont Magnus might scribble them down for us if he can remember them.It is unlikely that he does but still it is a shame that his only victories against Anand are "gone with the wind":(
