Arctic Chess Challenge, August 8, 2007
Of course it is easier to comment upon positive experiences than the other way around. Magnus has not been very eager to comment on the last few rounds from Tromsoe, although he was quite happy about his own play as black today against Simen Agdestein.
After Simen sacked an exchange on c4 Magnus got his hopes up a bit, but Simen played well throughout the game and a draw was agreed on move 35 (although Simen had one 1-2 minutes left on the clock.)
Magnus drew round 3 against FM Larsen after struggling to find winning chances, taking too must risk and even being lost at a time. He then won against school mate Stubberud (about 2200) in round 4.
With 3.5/5 he is still a full point behind the leaders. (He has lost some 5-6 rating points, it is not that bad really.)
His Elista second, (mister sunshine) Kjetil A.Lie drew against Majeica on the top board after beating Moiseenko yesterday to share the lead with at 4.5/5.
Today eleven year old local hero Peter Flermoen rated 1500 beat his second 2000+ opponent today (in 18 moves!), and young J. Thomassen (another school mate of Magnus), rated at 2075, beat his third IM (Porper)!
After his terrible start, Nick de Firmian secured his 3rd win in a row today (but is still one board below yours truly....)
On the bright side, the Tromsoe weather is superb with long sunny days and excellent conditions for walking in the mountains or touring the city centre.
The tournament staff has arranged some excursions including a trip with the cable car up to a restaurant overlooking the city as well as a fishing expedition. On Saturday there will be a boat tour around the island.

Do you hope to meat Magnus in the next round, Henrik? Do you think you've got a chance to get a draw, if you meet him? :-)
Shared with your son, huh? Perhaps you should try to play professional too? :-)
I hope Magnus can win his next match, so that he can gain half a point on most of the top players...

Magnus vs Henrik tomorrow!! Wow!
Good luck, both!
Can't wait for Henrik's report on this one. He will have first hand knowledge of this game, that's for sure :-)

That is your chance to get perfect material for some parental ribbing!
I don't think Magnus would hear the end of it, say, for the next decade. ;p
Go, Henrik!

Good Luck Henrik.
Don't be afraid of him.
You are his Father and he better show you some respect.
HaHa.
I will be there cheering for you Henrik.
I have cheered for Magnus enough now.
It will be fun cheering for you.
This is going to be the most fun chess game of the year.
I think he is going to crush his own father.
What a game this is going to be to watch.
Everyone is going to go wild kibitzing this game live.
You are a good sport Henrik.

First: Thanks very much for your response, Henrik!
Then: Thats not true is it? I thought it could happen, but... no, this is really weird. The whole tournament is weird. In the meantime I see it like this: After this year's results Magnus really has deserved a "tournament off", what I mean is: Why shouldn't he for once be allowed to just enjoy a tournament, without worrying too much about the results, and especially right after his "milestone victory" in Biel. It seems everything is prepared to make it a somewhat humorous tournament for Magnus, first this bad start, then playing against someone who had an even worse start, in the 5th round against his former trainer, and now, as the ultimate culmination... Oh, gosh, this will be really amusing and interesting! =)
By the way, although I might reveal the unbeatable modesty of my playing strength by saying so: I think his win in the 4th round was a quiet piece of genius art work - I still don't really understand his moves that led to the victory...:)
Well, Henrik, I wish you both a good game - but don't be too strict with your son, in either way! ;-)

Henrik nice checks at the end.
You got his rook just to let him know you can still play chess.
His last move Rc1 was kind of tricky of him.
Oh Well I was there cheering for good old dad.
Everyone on ICC had a great time watching the game.
At they end everyone felt that you played better than expected.
You certainly gave him a good game and you gave all the Henrik fans a good time.
Now dont feel bad Henrik.
But I am off back to cheering for Magnus next game.
You had your day in the cheering section.

Great game. Its a pity that you didnt win Henrik. I was hoping you would beat Magnus. But I guess in Norway parents arent allowed to beat their children ;]

Hi,
Good game Henrik....next time tell him to go to bed early, i.e. before you lose!

Jimmy,
I don't know what people expected, but I don't think I played well yesterday (not that it really matters though).
But I enjoyed playing "behind the chairs", on one of the top 9 boards, with direct access to the other top boards! (As long as it lasted....)
Vidar,
jeg slapp heldigvis å bekymre meg for hva jeg eventuelt skulle gjøre hvis det et øyeblikk skulle se ut som om jeg kunne klare remis :-)
LG,
I like that explanation! (Or maybe I should declare his hotel room Russian territory :-)
)
Finn,
telling him to go to bed late so that he may oversleep, is maybe a better strategy!
