Magnus! Congratulations to the shared first place in Corus 2008!!! Fantastic!!! The games was really exciting to watch, especially your games! I followed the games closely with Rybka (the strongest chess program today). In the future there will hardly be anyone that can give a computer resistance, but I also think that in the future there will hardly be anyone that can give You resistance, except the best computer.
If I may give you some advice, play through all of Fischer's games. All of them. Read and analyse My 60 Memorable Games by Bobby Fischer (the original version), so many times that you - with lightning speed - can show all the analysis in the whole book on a board, make sure you understand every word Fischer say in the book. You should go through all games of the strongest world champions, like Fischer, Capablanca and Morphy. And play Fischerandom Chess with computers, if you like Fischerandom?
You are a really great chess player Magnus i every way!

Congratulations, Magnus, for this exquisite result of shared first in one of the most prestigious tournaments ? Corus A 2008! Your uncompromising fighting spirit, great tactical skills and deep positional understanding produced some very exciting games. It was a pleasure to watch them, for which I have to thank you! Go on in your own style to many more great successes!
Thank you, Henrik, for your generous effort of keeping this very informative (and very objective) blog!

congrads to maguns for the most impressive result of the year so far! im am sure that his results will continue to sky rocket. mr henrik carlsen i have a question , maybe two.
1) would you say that it is
carlsen's talent for the game that has made him the most impressive young player these days or is he a product of
love for the game and very hard work?
2) is there any chance carlsen will ever play in a u.s tournament
thx alot! ,the blog is fantastic, and i enjoy it very much.

I agree that it would be a good idea to post Magnus' tournament schedule. I will see what I can do. In the meantime; he will play Morelia-Linares and then Amber Rapid & Blindfold next.
Andreas,
I appreciate your advice, thank you.
Laszlo,
Many thanks for you nice words!
Julius,
thank you.
1) - It is difficult to give a short answer. The more I think about it, the more I'm struggling to define talent.
Magnus' innate intellectual curiosity and ability to focus on a specific topic for hours and hours without considering it work, strikes me a highly important contributing factor.
He had various deep interests prior to chess but somehow his passion for chess has persisted for more than 9 years now. He is quite competitive and I guess success has become an important motivating factor in itself.
2) I cannot see why not, although with his current strenght it probably has to be quite a strong tournament to attract his interest.

FIDE says there will be GP tournaments interfering with Christmas this year and next. That doesn't seem like a very good idea. Not for gigerbread cookies, not for people who cherish this holiday. Do you expect Magnus or other players to have objections to the timing of those tournaments?
Takk for sist (ACC), og gratulasjoner og lykkeønskninger all around :)

Heinrik, I saw on the FIDE rating list that u r a 2100 chess player. So
I gather u have some
chess understanding.
Does Magnus ever help u to become a stronger player?
Does he try to improve your opening repertoire? What does Magnus think of your scandinavian defence?
(I saw u played it on chessbase XD)
Nicholas from Switzerland

Yes, Henrik, I have quite similar questions, if I may ask:
How often do you ask Magnus, why he played a certain move? How deeply do you discuss his games with him (nicholas thankfully asked about your own games already)? Do you actually ask him for help? And is he susceptible to recommendations from your side? Did or does Magnus' chess abilities make educating him in non-chess matters more difficult, or did or does he accept and respect your authority besides the chess board without hesitation? Phew, quite a few questions, but I always had them on my mind, and when if not now, as there is no tournament at the moment... ;) Although I am aware, it's cheeky to ask so many questions of this sort, naturally... I'll appreciate any answer, though...:)
By the way, congrats to his victory against Bartel today in the Bundesliga, nice one...! :)
Kind regards from Freiburg, Germany

Rune,
the December 2008 GP may be avoided by a few players, while December 2009 should not represent a problem. In the past we have tried to keep the family together during Christmas, but we won't stop Magnus from playing important tournaments during Christmas after he has tourned 18 :-)
Nicholas,
with regard to chess understanding everything is relative I guess...
Magnus has helped me improve, expecially a few years ago as we more often worked together and discussed his games in more detail.
The fact that GM moves and plans are not the complete mystery it used to be, but can rather be vividly explained by a family member, is of course of help to both me and his sisters during tournaments.
Despite my limited opening knowledge I tend to forget the little I know in between tournaments and I'm not serious enough about my own chess to make it worth while for Magnus to really care about my opening repertoire.
Maybe if I'll put in a real effort it would
change.
(Recently I've beaten some FMs and IM's in 5-minute on ICC so maybe I'm making some progress :-) .)
Martin,
often I follow Magnus' tournament games via ICC and/or with a computer in the hotel room or at home. On such occasions I sometimes inquire carefully about certain moves or lines after the game. It is interesting to hear his evaluation. Quite often he disagrees with computer lines I may be referring to. It is a way for me to be able to briefly discuss his games with him.
If he wants to explain his games in more detail I'll be happy to get first hand knowledge from an expert, but of course I cannot contribute much myself.
I do not make recommendations (or more precisely my intention is not to do so), hence the question of susceptability is no longer applicable I think.
On the question regarding authority outside chess; I'm not sure his chess abilities as such are relevant. But, his logical approach and high level of perfection is relevant as he expects a stringent and clear logic in any advice I try to bring to the table on any subject. This is of course a great stimulus for me to try to maintain my own intellectual vigour.
Sorry that it took so long to respond but as you know we have been travelling for days.
Best regards from Morelia!
