Aerosvit 2008 Round 3

Balcony view from our rooms at the 14th floor of the Foros Sanatorium Complex.
Such surroundings are a comfort when away from home for so long :-)

Peter Svidler and Loek Van Wely in pleasant conversation while Magnus is filling in his notation sheet.

Loek is both known for his sharp play as well as some excellent opening preparations. Magnus is trying to surprise Loek. 1.c4, your turn!

Tournament officials and the emblem of the Aerosvit tournament in Foros.

Loek responded 1....c6 and they entered the Slav Moscow variation. Magnus deviated from the main line pretty early capturing on f6.
They have reached move 24 by now, and there is that many pieces left. The position is fairly equal according to commentators but I expect Magnus to put some pressure on Loek in the endgame :-)

I'm speechless.... The Mozart of Chess.
What a brilliant display in endgame play.

Gratulerer, rating performance er 3000 hittil! Og Henrik, det staves Loek... :-)

Magnus missed 43. Ke4 and then had to work very hard and had to find only-moves but played that flawlessly. I'm sure lot of top-grandmasters would have faltered finding the winning continuations, this was definitely not easy.

Nice win, the endgame was particularly exciting. Magnus made only a single error, but managed to save the game anyway.

Forget football and summer olympics. Nothing is more spellbounding than Magnus, when he plays tournaments like this!
In this 3rd game he showed a tremendous will to win. When the comentators and computer programs said "draw", Magnus just played on and managed to win the game in the very end.
Also, when Loek had only about 15 minutes left, Magnus played a serie of fast moves, increasing the pressure on Loek.

It seems Loek is training on openings, while Magnus is training on end games :)

Great win today! Henrik, how are you enjoying being in this circus? Are your chess skills improving? What do you do while Magnus plays? Sit and watch every move with a computer by your side?
Did the other players bring helpers? Are you able to analyze things together with Magnus?

Henrik, you expected right!
It is impossible not to be surprised/impressed by Magnus' incredible results these days.
Henrik, you know Magnus better than any of us, does he surprise you as well? Now that he is on his way to the top of the world, do you worry that people expect too much from him? After all, he is still only 17, and he has so much time left.
No rush.

A nice girl, for Magnus is Marie Sebag (she is French) ... sames ages, Current FIDE rating: 2521.
Strong couple ever.

All, thank you,
great to see your creative and enthusiastic comments!
Gegga,
of course I enjoy it, although my nerves are probably not as good as Magnus'.
During the games I find it hard to concentrate on other things than the game unless I really have to.
Most of the others brought seconds, for some reason Magnus has not felt he really has needed a second lately. But personally I think that will change.
During the tournaments I do a lot of reading, try to exercise and do some "work".
Tarjei,
yes, ever since he started to make progress after struggling a bit in the winter 2004/5 I've been waiting for his next downturn...., so far in vain fortunately :-)
And yes, the downside of his successes this year is the increased (unreasonable) expectations. Not much I can do about
it though.

Congratulations with the phenomenal achievements Magnus have made the last years, but particulary this season. A united chessworld is absolutely stunned by this prodigy who for the moment appear to be irreproachable. I really hope he wins this tournament and becomes the nr. 1 on the world ranking.
Cheers!
Cheers!
