Magnus won Round 1 in great style !
Round 1 featured Magnus - Morozevich, Topalov - Anand, Ivantchuk –Leko and Svidler – Aronian.Again Magnus faced the KID and he chose the closed variation with g3, Lg2. Amazingly he found a promising piece sacrifice already on move 13, Nxd6. After advancing his queen pawn he got the piece back on move 18 with a pawn up. Black had some initiative and it looked drawish as Anand – Topalov and Svidler – Aronian took their draw.
On move 40 Morozevich chose to sacrifize another pawn to reach a probably theoretical ending with 2+3 pawn against 1+2 and opposite colored bishops.
A little earlier Ivantchuk had sacked a piece offer Leko. He had spent all his time looking for a win and had to settle for a repetition of moves on move 28 with few seconds left on the clock.
Morozevich should maybe have advanced his g-pawn in the endgame, anyhow after Magnus played g5 and switched his king to the queen side, the two-pawn race on each side was in favour of Magnus. 1-0 and Magnus has taken the lead ! What a great start, especially after his somewhat lacklustre Corus tournament last month.
After the game Magnus was facing a crowd of spectators wanting his autograph. He wrote some for 5-10 minutes and was taken out the backdoor. I hope the spectators understand that he needs to rest and eat now after a long game.
He’s currently having diner in his room, relaxing and has starting to think about round 2 against Aronian.
Thanks a lot to those of you who have commented and given positive feedback to this blog!

Nice game. Everyone on ICC always cheers for Magnus. More people watch Magnus' games then any other games on ICC.
Having this blog is wonderful. We now get to find out what you were thinking. Yes the move Qh3 was a funny move to find. But everyone is very happy with Magnus' play.
I expect to watch all of Magnus' games. It is the highlight of my day. Good luck with your game today. Anand is a good gentleman and fine sportsman. I know you will enjoy playing with him. I certainly will enjoy watching the game.

What a spectacular sacrifice Nxd6 was! I wonder how Fritz would have defended - was allowing Nxc5-d6-d7 really forced? But two thumbs up for Magnus' great fighting spirit.
I played myself in the lower group of Morelia (living 300 km away from Morelia) and I was around to see a few moves late in the evening (after my game). A pity I couldn't meet neither Magnus nor Henrik, had I known about this blog I would perhaps have been able to contact you. Good luck in the rest of the tournament, it has been a clear proof that Magnus belongs above 2700+ now.
Incidentally I got twins in december 2005 (Majken and Magnus!) so one was named after the "prodigy kid" by my 15-year old son because I was cheering so often about Magnus in the FIDE WC.
