Round 2 - Black against Aronian. What a game !

With both legs solidly back on the ground, Magnus faced Aronian with black today in Round 2.
Surely a very exiting game, but Magnus was a bit unhappy about the result as he had a winning position for a long time.
In the Catalan line Aronian chose the somewhat unusual 10.Nc3 and Magnus spent a lot of time trying to get out of the Lg2-pin against Nc6 and afterwards to activate his pieces. He gave back the pawn plus another one, and after 18….g5 he thought he was OK. Then Aronian sacked his night on f4 erroneously as he had missed the subsequent f5! Magnus spent a lot of time looking for something that could explain the sack but didn’t find anything. When Aronian offered a draw after 23.Qh3, Magnus (again) spent a lot of time to pull himself together and muster the energy and courage to continue.
He clearly had a winning position after 27.Rad1, but faced with 3 choices, he discarded Bg6 as he missed the Qh3 continuation, he new Bf8 was good but chose Rd7 as he missed white’s nice 28.e6!
Aronian found the drawing line, ½-½, and Magnus is sharing the lead with Ivantchuk after his impressive win over Topalov. (The other games were drawn).
Well, Magnus is a bit unhappy about 1.5 out of 2 in Linares, how’s that!
Has he just been fortunate with his opponents poor play or has also his strength increased further?
I don’t know, we’ll know more after this tournament.

Also a big thumbs up for starting this blog, makes these tournaments even more interesting to follow.

Great Blog!! keep it up!!

I noticed Magnus is dressing up, dropping the hoodies for a suit coat!? That's a switch. What's behind it?
I'd rather play in a hoodie myself. More comfortable.

If Magnus plays with the same quality as this blog we will have much fun futher in this tournament !

Well Mark, take a look at pictures from the opening cermony and rounds last year. A hoodie just doesn't fit in. To me it is a matter of showing the organiser some respect. My impression is that dress code is more important in Latino countries.

Great start by Magnus. Hope he stays aggressive!
BTW, there's an saying - 'clothes maketh the man'; is that why he's playing smarter? :-P

Mr Carlsen - congratulations on your blog. It's nice to have a little behind the scenes information and I'm sure we all wish Magnus the very best.
Cheers.

Yes, Bg6 was much better than Rd7? But a draw with the black pieces against Aronian isn't bad, nonetheless. Looking forward to the next game!

Hello Henrik & Magnus, you're doing great! Nice games, and the blog is fine (a bit dark on my screen though). I'm very impressed by your writing about Magnus, well balanced. Looking forward to the next games, but will I survive spending more nights like this?

I'd like to express my enthiusiasm for this blog too. Keep up the good work, Henrik! By the way we've mentioned this site twice already at Chessvibes.
Good luck for Magnus,
Peter
P.S.
No 'Queen's Gambit Accepted' - it was a line from the Catalan.

I would also like to object to the cruel nature of the Morelia schedule in perspective of CET (GMT+1).
I've been a zombie at work all day today.
I'm sure Anand wouldn't object if you started tonight's game a little earlier :-)

Magnus Carlsen ... the next world champion, I'd say

I watch all of Magnus' games. He is in a learning stage. He does not have to win for me to enjoy his games. Some day I will be able to say I was a fan of Magnus for years. I find it exciting to watch him grow and get better at chess.
I wish people would take some pressure off Magnus and just let him enjoy playing. I enjoy watching him play. So let's sit back and watch and enjoy all his games.
I really like this blog. I so much enjoy reading what Magnus was thinking in the positions. Great reading.

Great energy shown by Magnus, so far. Has the withdrawal of Radjabov helped Magnus in this tournament? I must say in the last couple of years, I've been more interested to follow the games of these two young stars, than he "veteran" GM's. I feel they are bringing a new energy and creativity to the game, that is fascinating to follow.
The chess world seems to be ripe for a new dominant player soon. My guess is it's one of these two guys. Keep it up!

It's fascinating to get a super -GM's insight into top flight chess. Keep up the good work Henrik and Magnus !

i certainly believe that the chess strength of super GM Carlsen is getting stronger at Linares 2007 after his disappointing performances at Biel 2006 and Corus 2007. I may say that he is now used to the terrain of the playing fields with 2700 rated players in the world. Keep it up GM Carlsen and be a world champion someday!!! Regards!

Congrats to young Magnus! He makes following top flight chess exciting no matter what the critics say! Scoreboard baby!! Anyway, I'm in the United States and a couple years ago our Nakamura was making waves at 16 yrs old. Many here hoped he would do then just what Magnus is doing now. Oh well, he still has potential.
Anyway, I have some questions for you (or Magnus as the case may be):
1. Can you project a rating change after Morelia/Linares for Magnus?
2. What does Magnus think, if anything, about young Hikaru Nakamura?
3. Are you planning a visit to Southern California any time in the future?
Thanks.

Greetings Henrik! What a tremendous bounceback for Magnus! Second from the bottom at Corus Wijk Aan Zee, then Second from the top at Morelia / Linares! Will he ever come to America?
How about the World Open in Philadelphia in July, just for fun??
