Round 3 White against Anand

Again, Magnus was involved in the only decisive game of the round. Unfortunately on the losing side this time. On a bad day he simply made to many erroneous evaluations to survive against a player like Anand.

After a quiet Meraner opening, Magnus thought he was clearly better after 16.Ng5, but he had missed Kh8. He should have gone for a draw with Bxf6 but he still thought he had a small advantage and played g3. After 20. Bb2 he offered a draw but soon understood why Anand declined. Then Magnus found a number of precise defending moves and they reached a position where Anand thought his best winning chances were to push the f-pawn and hope Magnus wouldn’t see the 27.Bg6 drawing line, and … he didn’t. After 27.Be4 it went downhill fast although he might have put up a better fight with 31.Kd2 (instead of Kd1).

The best thing for Magnus will be to put the game firmly behind him and look head. 1.5 / 3 is still a good start, and a big pluss for really having tried to win all three games so far!

Sorry for the loss, but Magnus is making lots of good entertainment with his optimistic play. Myself i'm happy with that, and hope he will go on playing with temper and spirit, i am certain he will give us lots of good times in the years to come. We soon forget his mistakes..hope he do so himself as well. Best luck in the games to come!

Magnus vil helt sikkert passere 2700 i rating for godt...i år :-)

Great blog Henrik!
Sorry for the result against Anand. Anyway, I'm very impressed by the ...g5 move Magnus found in the game against Aronian! Not a easy move to find, and not an easy move to play....All the best for the rest of the tournament and future!

Keep it up, Magnus!

Not the best of games for Magnus. He could've easily got a draw, but nevermind, he is still ahead of Topalov so far! I'm sure he will play as well as he did in the first 2 games for the rest of the tournament. Good Luck Magnus!

P.S. What does Magnus do on his day off? Does he spend alot of time preparing for the match the following day or is he outside getting a tan in the sunny streets of Mexico?

Hi, I am a reanonably strong amateur player and following Magnus's achievements closely. I had high hopes that he could be world champion after his star performance in Corus C some years ago. Since then, Magnus has indeed become a top 25 GM.
However, sometimes I am in doubt. The game against Anand is one example. The completely fawlty plan of Ng5, that is a move that one shouldn't play in the position, even when it is good! Maybe Magnus should work more with the strongest, like Kasparov and Kramnik, to improve his positional feel?

I watched game 4 Carlsen vs. Ivantchuk: I think, a match on a high level. I am surprised, that Ivantchuk lost this match in the end, although it was an equal endpositon. Was Ivantchuk such impressed or did he make bad moves because of time-pressure?

Be4 was the losing move. He should have played gxh instead. But otherwise it was an interesting game. Looking forward to more Magnus games!
